The Chronic Kidney Disease patient is Sandeep Bhatnagar, a school principal in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, and C G Hanumanthu, a civil contractor from Mahabubnagar in Telangana, got a rare interstate, inter-hospital kidney swap. This means the donors are interchanged and co-insistently matched with the recipients, a procedure is done by a team of doctors across two hospitals in Hyderabad.

One, as well as the other, has been waiting for a kidney donor but they still need to get a match from their family, even as their wives were ready to donate a kidney for them. Eventually, Sandeep’s wife (Indu Bhatnagar) and Hnimanthu’s wife (Varalaxmi) donated kidneys to each other husbands. Sandeep’s wife donates to Hnimanthu whereas Varalaxmi donates her kidney to Sandeep at Virinchi Hospital, Hyderabad.

Those quadruple underwent concurrent surgeries with a streaming real-time video. It took eight months for documentation and paperwork to go into the complicated process.

Dr. K. S. Nayak, chief nephrologist and head of the department of nephrology and kidney transplant, at Virichi Hospital, told us that “There are many legalities involved and several trips had to be made. To cut out any chance of withdrawal of consent by one couple by one after one of the surgeries, all four had to undergo surgeries at the exact time and date (December 9)”.

As per data 90% of people waiting for a transplant have no idea about swap transplantation. Exhibit how the donor pool can be expanded beyond cities and states, the doctors hope to open the floodgates for more such transplants.

The Chief Nephrologist from KIMSHospital Dr. Sreedhar Reddy said, “Patients with stage V CKD (chronic kidney disease) have only two options which is dialysis and transplant. Studies show that less than half of the patients who require dislysis actually have access to it, getting an organ match is even more difficult. The families put in a lot of effort to get the documentation approved from the both states.”

Let’s hope the two recipients will recover and have healthy and happy live with low cretinine level.
